Sunglasses & UV light
The harmful effects of sunlight on our skin is well understood. Less well known are the ocular risks of sun exposure and the need for eye protection, even starting from childhood.
Children spend more time outside than adults. The average child receives 3 times the average UV dose of an adult. Up to 80% of life time UV exposure occurs before the age of 20. The crystalline lens of a child lets through more UV radiation to the retina than does the lens of an adult.
Let’s briefly look at eye disease linked to UV radiation:
- UVB radiation is associated with the development of skin cancer of the eyelid.
- The development of cataracts is positively linked to increasing exposure to sun
- Recent research suggests that cumulative exposure to the sun’s higher energy visible light may contribute to the development of age related macular degeneration.
It’s clear from the above that we all need to take our eyes exposure to UV light much more seriously.
We have available UV safe photochromatic prescription lenses, fixed tint sunglasses and even completely clear UV filters to provide you and your family’s eyes with the protection from UV that research is now revealing to be appropriate.
Please contact us for individual advice on UV protection from our extensive range of products, given your particular circumstances, working environment and lifestyle.
